Accidents involving trucks result in more than 300,000 injuries in the EU each year. Of these, 54% involve car occupants - and car-truck accidents involving the front of the truck amount to 65%.

These figures suggest we need to work on vehicle crash compatibility. We need to introduce a deformable truck front protection zone - 'soft nose' - and develop coherent EU legislation.

And driver training needs to improve: safer equipment will lead to fewer fatal accidents only if used properly, and if significant efforts are made to upgrade road infrastructure.

These measures can save lives: improving crush zones would help boost the survivor rate for impacts at up to 90 km/h, and lower fatalities by 10%.
