Hélène Chabi

What is your current position in the Volvo Group?
I am a Global Sourcing Buyer for components to our truck cabs. It is components like trimming parts, floor mats, noise shields, plastic parts and storages. I have the main task to be the initial contact the suppliers, negotiate agreements, perform sourcing activities and develop strategies.

Why did you choose Volvo Group as an employer?
I studied in Lyon and worked for one year at a chemical company. When that job ended, there was an opportunity for me to work at the Renault Trucks division within Volvo Group since two buyers where on maternity leave. Renault Trucks is part of an international company and one of the biggest companies in Lyon. It looked interesting and I felt that it could be good for my career to work there for some time.

How has your career been this far?
It has been very interesting. I soon, end of 2006, got a proposal to be a permanent employee and I right away got my first purchasing portfolio for cab components. I have since then been responsible for purchasing of different kind of components at different levels (Junior, Senior, Segment owner…)  but also got the opportunity to do other things in parallel, like leading a team within Operational Development. The last year my work has been even more global and I today work more with strategic issues as a part of my purchasing responsibilities.

Do you get any professional or personal coaching from the Volvo Group?
I have during my years had four different managers. All of them have supported me in my wishes to take on new assignments and to take more responsibility. Volvo Group has a system where each employee each year set a Personal Business Plan together with the manager. There you agree what you have to achieve the coming year but also what support and training the company will give you to help you reach your goals.

Have you been involved in any global projects in the Volvo Group?
Yes, absolutely. During my first years I worked mostly with suppliers in Europe, but today I work more globally and have regular meetings with colleagues from Sweden, China, Brazil, USA, India and Japan. I have been involved in sourcing activities in Brazil and was there to set up different agreements.

If you were to recommend Volvo Group as an employer to a friend, what would you put forward?
It is a huge company and thereby offers a lot of opportunities. When you feel less inspired of your work, there are many possibilities to try something new. You got the possibility to grow and there are many training offers for you to choose between if you like. And even if I work in France, I feel that this is a global company. Our way of working is in a positive way influenced by many other cultures and therefore this is not like a standard French company.

How would you describe your, so far, best experience from being an employee of the Volvo Group?
We right now in the Volvo Group launch a series of new trucks. They have been developed during quite some years now. For some of the new trucks, I was involved in the sourcing project already from the start of the projects. I feel very proud when we now finally can show the great new trucks for the world and when I know that I have been part of these great projects.

What do you do when off work?
We have sport training facilities at work and I some months ago started to train there, mostly during lunchtime, and I like it very much. It is Zumba, Body sculpting, Step and so on. I also like to go to the cinema. I like SF and crime movies. I also like reading books and take holiday trips.

What are your goals, plans and hopes for the future?
In the near and mid future, I would like to take a managerial position. I have had responsibilities within several different areas during the year, but not yet people management. I would like to share my experience with others. Long term I probably will look outside purchasing and do something else, perhaps within marketing and sales instead.
