Today’s young people will be the decision makers of the future. That means it is crucial to encourage them to get engaged in their communities if we are to tackle the world’s environmental problems. The Volvo Adventure – in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme – encourages teenagers to identify an environmental issue affecting their community, and then come up with ways to address it.
The internet-based competition attracts participants from around the world. Teams of two to five members aged 13 to 16 perform an environmental project in their community. The ten finalists receive a paid trip to the Volvo Adventure Conference in Sweden, where they present their projects to an international jury.
Previous participants have focused on protecting wild dolphins and manatees, taking used cooking oil from fast food restaurants and using it to produce renewable vehicle fuel, and preventing the wasting of water from public taps.
