The management of Volvo in Sweden and Belgium decided to make Volvo Europa Truck in Oostakker near Ghent the first CO2-free company in Belgium. This means that the energy the company needs for its activities will be produced without CO2 emissions.
For this, a new biomass-based heating system has been been built, an existing boiler adapted to burn bio-oil and wind turbines were built for the production of electricity. The project was implemented in collaboration with Belgian energy company Electrabel. Both companies signed a declaration of intent and together are invested around 10 million euros in setting up the CO2-free Volvo production facility.
