Sustainable Development

Sustainable development

"... meeting the the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs... "
is the most used definition of sustainable development that originates from the Brundtland Commission in 1987.

Economic and social development
The three dimensions of sustainable development, economic development, social development and environmental care are all equally important for our ability to meet the current and future needs.

Volvo signed Global Compact in 2001
Volvo's history in addressing sustainable development is based on a long tradition of responsible business conduct and long-term and consistent efforts to improve quality, safety and the environment. To take this a step further, Volvo signed the UN initiative Global Compact in November 2001. In practice, Volvo has applied the principles of the Global Compact for a long time, in human rights, labour issues and environmental care. By signing the Global Compact, Volvo further clarifies its ambition to be a responsible and credible member of the society.
