The Volvo Group presents its strongest commitments on road safety to Belgian authorities

by Volvo Group Representation EU

On 05 September, the Volvo Group presented its commitments on traffic safety at the Safe and Sober event organised by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) in the Belgian Federal Parliament

Melchior Wathelet, Belgian State Secretary for Environment, Energy and Mobility, described the improving traffic safety situation in Belgium. But figures are still “unacceptable compared to the EU average” Wathelet said: 100 less killed last year and 78 killed per million inhabitants. Still, Melchior Wathelet is confident about the Belgian strategy: Awareness raising campaigns, controls and sanctions. ”With these three we want to change the mentalities of drivers” Melchior Wathelet added.

The Belgian strategy goes in line with the presentation made by Lennart Pilskog, Director Public Affairs, Group Trucks Sales & Marketing EMEA. Lennart Pilskog took the opportunity to give a highlight to the Volvo Group commitment in Safety being one of its Core value. Pilskog also described the Group pioneering role in fitting Alcolock devices in its Volvo trucks.

Participants also heard the experience from Finland and the Netherlands in devising and implementing alcohol interlock programmes to tackle drink driving
