Transport Security

Transport Security

Transport security covers threats like terrorism, theft, and accidents involving dangerous goods. We have to guard against trucks and cargo being used to carry out terrorist acts, and to transport illicit cargo. Nor can we ignore threats like suicide bombers in buses and bombs in luggage, or even Incidents at bus stops, stations and terminals. The risks are becoming ever more serious, and security of the transport chain has become a priority.

Technology can help: identification, detection and tracking, and monitoring devices can boost security of the transport chain. Transport security should become part of EU's new Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7).

A 'secure operator' scheme should be set up on a voluntary basis to allow operators in the supply chain to prove their compliance with minimum security.

Better security would help the entire transport chain, in Europe and globally. And it could provide more rapid transport through secure operator scheme, and traceability of cargo at any stage in the transport chain.
