Road deaths in the EU have fallen by more than 17% since 2001, but they are still too high. About 40,000 people die on European roads every year, and we are currently set to miss our target of halving the total number of fatalities from 40,000 to 20,000 by 2010.
We need to support drivers by introducing the best available technology in all vehicles. We can improve driver behaviour through the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which can alert a drowsy driver, offer lane assistance, and apply an 'alco lock' that blocks the truck if the driver has too much alcohol on his breath.
