Urban Transport

Four out five European citizens live in urban areas. Despite cuts in vehicle emissions, our increased mobility is raising pollution and congestion. Society and governments are now ready to deal with urban road problems, and this is reflected by a number of legislative proposals on EU level.

In order to tackle congestion, cities must be ready to sharply expand their public transport systems. One solution is the Bus Rapid Transit system (BRT) - an alternative to underground railway systems, with large buses, special bus lanes and comfortable terminals.

But at EU level, best practices should be fostered, and support should be offered through research funds and other incentives.

Transport solutions that can be rapidly implemented, at reasonable cost can have a huge impact on congestion and emission levels in urban areas.
