Improving security

Trafficking, terrorism, hijacking and thefts are some of the risks that our customers, and society at large, have to deal with. At the Volvo Group we are looking both at technical solutions and cooperative efforts in order to present viable ways to protect driver, truck and cargo.

These technologies are currently being refined, developed and implemented at different markets.

  • Remote Vehicle Immobilization is a security service that enables a remote authorized user (the owner, police etc.) to initiate safe immobilization of a vehicle, to prevent continued unauthorized use. The service will benefit players by protecting both people, and fixed and movable assets.
  • Remote management of the 5th wheel makes it possible to securely lock and un-lock the connecting point between the trailer and the tractor, thus preventing criminals from absconding with the trailer and cargo.
  • Trailer & cargo sensors show when someone tries to access the cargo section of a trailer illegally. A signal is automatically sent to the trucking company or to a 24/7 control center.
  • Driver Identity Authentication makes sure only authorized drivers are behind the wheel. This technology is becoming increasingly important to combat threats to sensitive transport carrying dangerous goods (terrorism) or high-value cargo (theft). However, caution must be exercised to protect drivers from becoming the victims of hostage situations, especially when using biometrics as a means of identification.

    To further increase the security for the driver, identification is done from inside the cab and communicated to for example ports and other security check points via the truck’s on-board system. This means that the driver can stay inside the cab, making the system not only more secure, but also less time consuming. Information on where to park and unload is also sent to the truck’s computer with for example directions and information on special restrictions within a certain area.
  • Security systems in 2020 The above technologies are for the most part available today, although they are not used on a large scale yet. The greatest change by 2020 however will not be brought about by an individual technical solution, but how solutions are connected. In order to meet the challenges ahead more stakeholders will have to be involved, which means greater sharing of information between, for example, manufacturers, public authorities, logistics companies and the owners of goods. This in turn poses a new challenge since shared information is harder to restrict to authorized personnel. 
  • Control centres will play an increasingly important role. A control centre can receive information on intrusion into the truck or trailer. They can also start video and audio recordings, follow a vehicle or its goods and remotely halt or limit a stolen vehicle's speed.

    Language and roaming barriers need to be managed to provide services to all authorized stakeholders from sender to receiver. Since the driver isn't in control of the vehicle he or she is also less likely to be targeted for criminal activity.
  • Secure corridors and stops are a way to secure goods and to safeguard drivers during stops. Guarded parking areas and planned routes make it easier to spot diversions and avoid high risk situations.
  • Intelligence and cooperation are essential in making transport safer. In the future, information on, for example, fluctuations in criminal activity will be shared through cooperation between public authorities, security companies, vehicle manufacturers and goods owners. It is not viable to have separate systems for the truck, trailer and goods; instead they will be coordinated and monitored within the same system.
  • Information limitation means that it will become harder to obtain information on transportation. That makes it harder for criminals to plan ahead and it increases the chances of them getting caught.
