Volvo Group’s truck plant in Ghent is the first in the world with carbon-dioxide-free production. The official opening took place today. The project that has focused on reviewing the use of energy has been in progress since 2005.

The Volvo Group can now present the first vehicle plant in the world that is completely free from carbon dioxide (CO2), Volvo Trucks’ plant in Ghent, Belgium. The Volvo Group’s efforts pertaining to CO2-free plants are fully in line with EU’s goal for reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 20% in Europe by 2020.

About 180 EU parliamentarians, members of the European Commission and transport policy stakeholders gathered together when the Volvo Group demonstrated its seven carbon dioxide-free trucks in Brussels.

The Volvo Group is the first vehicle manufacturer to produce seven demonstration trucks that can all be driven without emitting any environmentally harmful carbon dioxide. These trucks were exhibited for the first time today in Stockholm and are equipped with diesel engines that have been modified to operate on seven different types of renewable liquid and gaseous fuels. “Volvo is part of the climate problem, but today we have shown that carbon-dioxide free transports are a possibility and that we as a vehicle manufacturer both can and will be part for the solution to the climate issue,” says Leif Johansson, CEO of the Volvo Group.

The Volvo Group and Vattenfall have concluded a cooperation agreement concerning sustainable energy deliveries. The agreement includes the delivery of Vattenel, a product covered by an Environmental Product Declaration, and trading in emission rights.

The Volvo Environment Prize Foundation is awarding the 2007 Volvo Environment Prize to Amory B. Lovins, Rocky Mountain Institute, USA, for his exceptional breakthroughs in the field of energy. Over the past 30 years, his contributions have encompassed both new theoretical know-how and practical applications for ways of reducing the use of energy. In order to cut emissions of greenhouse gases and help resolve the climate issue, more efficient utilisation of energy is a vital tool.

Volvo Buses has been granted Government support from the Swedish Energy Authority for the development of its hybrid technology for buses.

The Volvo Group will be participating as a cooperation partner in a joint environmental program between the US and Swedish Governments. The program is aimed at reducing consumption of fossil fuel by focusing on projects within the areas of energy and vehicle development. For Volvo, it would involve producing powertrains based on alternative fuels suitable for heavy vehicles.
