Volvo is to take over The Whitbread Round The World Race. Under an agreement with the British Whitbread group, Volvo will become the new owner of the pre-eminent global sailing race on June 1, 1998. Volvo is also to be sponsor of the 1997-1998 event, which will set off on September 21 this year with the new name of The Whitbread Round The World Race for the Volvo Trophy.

Volvo Trucks is boosting its presence in Tunisia and investing in a truck assembly plant in the city of Tunis. The new plant is a joint venture between the Volvo Truck Corporation, Tunisian vehicle manufacturer Setcar, and Magrimex which distributes Volvo trucks in the country.

Volvo informed the international equestrian federation, FEI, today that the company has decided to discontinue its sponsorship of Volvo World Cups in dressage and show jumping at the end of the 1997/98 season. The finals for dressage in Gothenburg on April 2-5, 1998, and show jumping in Helsinki on April 16-19, 1998, will mark the end of Volvo's corporate equestrian sponsorship.
