On Tuesday 17 October the 11th Volvo Environment Prize was awarded at a ceremony at the School of Economics and Commercial Law in Gothenburg. The Prize is instituted to recognize research and achievements in the environmental field.

Volvo Penta is investing nearly SEK 100 million in its engine plant in Vara, Sweden. The investment encompasses new technology for processing of engine components. It is also a step towards the company's product renewal program in the years ahead. At the same time, this investment will secure jobs at the Vara plant.

Volvo Buses is introducing the first of a number of buses based on the company's new product platform, TX.

The main attraction of Volvo Buses' exhibit's at the IAA trade show is the new Volvo B12M with a specially designed body for intercity traffic. Volvo is also displaying its B12-600, a luxuriously equipped coach in the prestige class, the Volvo B10-400 for intercity traffic, the Volvo 7000 for urban traffic and a Volvo B12-500 that is specially designed to accommodate disabled passengers. There are in addition a number of new components on display, including an independent front suspension station with electronically controlled disc brakes, a new gearbox and a new retarder.

Volvo Buses is now introducing the only fully integrated system for driver and management information -Dynafleet. The system offers several new possibilities for more efficient, safer and more economical operations. Clear communications and exact information make it easier for both drivers and management to make the right decisions at all times.

Whatever the virtues of the Volvo Exhaust Filter, it cannot really cope with nitrogen oxides. However, the next stage of development-EGR-is not far off. Although this can cut Nox levels by half, its effect on fuel consumption remains to be clarified.

Greater reliability, improved monitoring of fuel consumption and simpler diagnostics are the most important features of the electronic system used in the Volvo B12M.

The Volvo B12M offers a broad choice of gearboxes, including the new Volvo EGS-V - a further development of the Volvo G8-EGS. EGS is the abbreviation for Easy Gear Change, and the new gearbox not only makes shifting easy but also is easier to service than its predecessor. The Volvo EGS-V can be equipped with the Volvo Compact Retarder, an efficient ancillary brake.
