Carbon dioxide-neutral factories

Energy efficient production
In 2007, the Volvo Group presented the world's first carbon dioxide neutral automotive factory in Gent, Belgium. Investments were made in wind power and a biofuel plant that provide electricity and heat that does not result in any carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. As a result emissions have declined by 14,000 tons annually.

More factories to go CO2-neutral
The Volvo Group's efforts relating to CO2-neutral factories are completely in line with EU's goal of reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 20 percent in Europe by 2020.

"Our ambition is to make all our factories CO2-neutral factories and Gent is the first," says Volvo CEO Leif Johansson. "It is not an easy undertaking, but we are prepared to try different alternatives to achieve our goal for CO2-neutral production in our factories."

The objective is that all plant shall be CO2 neutral.

Substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
Our factories in the US have joined to the US Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders Program and have thereby pledged to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

In 2007, the facility at New River Valley managed to reduce its emission of greenhouse gases by 40 percent compared with 2003. The Macungie plant managed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 50 percent between 2003 and 2006 by adding to the efficiency of production processes and by using alternative fuels.
