CO2 neutral transports not just an utopian dream

There are many convincing reasons to replace the use of fossil fuels, since they contribute to higher levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The growing demand for oil, combined with limited supply, will also lead to continually higher prices.

CO2 neutral transports
CO 2 neutral vehicles are powered by fuel produced from renewable raw material, such as biomass. Vehicles that operate on renewable fuels do not emit additional CO2 to the atmosphere.

Volvo Group has pioneered the development of seven different demonstrator vehicles that can be operated without extra emission to the atmosphere of climate-impacting carbon dioxide. This, together with improvements in energy efficiency and advances in hybrid technology, proves that CO2-neutral transport is not just a utopian dream - and that Volvo Group is prepared to meet the challenge.

Modified diesel engines
A major advantage of the diesel engine is that it can be adapted to run on a wide range of renewable fuels. The diesel engine is one of the most efficient energy converters available to us today.

Careful considerations
There are different aspects to consider regarding renewable fuels. Since some renewable fuels can be produced from crops such as wheat and sugar beet, there is a potential risk that our common interest in developing CO2-neutral transport may interfere with food production. Our opinion is that the scarce resource base must be managed with care and that competition with food production must be avoided.

Another important issue is availability. Even if current production resources are expanded rapidly, availability will be limited for a number of years to come. This means that the best and most logical solution in the short term is to blend the biofuels now available with today's fossil fuels.

Creating discussions
The seven trucks were first presented in 2007. During 2008 the vehicles were presented in many locations, including the US at the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference. The objective of showing the vehicles in different arenas was to create discussions with different actors in society. The Volvo Group has showed that we have the technology and knowledge to develop vehicles for renewable fuels, but we cannot do it alone. Through active cooperation with politicians, government agencies and fuel producers, we can make CO2 neutral transports a reality in the future.
