Volvo, IMG and The European Tour were today hosted by Bulgaria’s Minister of Physical Education and Sport, Mr Svilen Neykov, and the Bulgarian Golf Association at a special press conference for the Volvo World Match Play Championship in the nation’s capital, Sofia. The press conference marked the beginning of the countdown to Bulgaria’s first full European Tour event, the 2013 Volvo World Match Play Championship, which will be played at the breathtaking Thracian Cliffs Course in Bulgaria from the 16th to the 19th May.

The Volvo Golf Champions today announced both a prize fund of €2 million (approx. R22.5 million) as a host of Ryder Cup heroes confirm their participation in the third edition of the Volvo Golf Champions, taking place at the Durban Country Club from the 10th to the 13th January 2013.

Volvo today announced their new golf strategy, bringing the Championship to geographical areas of interest for Volvo’s businesses. The strategic move will see the Championship rotate between a few host destinations, acknowledging the true global nature and growing global appeal of golf. Volvo and IMG also announced that the 2013 Volvo World Match Play Championship will be played at the breathtaking Thracian Cliffs Course in Bulgaria from the 16th to the 19th May. For the 48th edition of the event Volvo and IMG will work closely with the Bulgarian Government in conjunction with the national Golf Association.

Volvo’s presence in China receives strong support from our sponsorship and organisation of the Volvo China Open, the next staging of which will be in May 2013.

In one of the most gripping finals seen for a long time, Bai Zheng-kai won the Boys Group A section of the Volvo China Junior Match Play Championship at the 19th hole over Hui Yu-heng. His win earns him a coveted place in the 2013 Volvo China Open where he will be up against some of the world’s top golfers.

The Volvo Golf Champions will take place at the Durban Country Club and is an exclusive, limited field event with no halfway cut, open only to European Tour players who have won an event on the previous year’s European Tour International Schedule, the only exception being current Tour Members with more than 10 European Tour victories. Defending champion Branden Grace has already confirmed that he will defend his title.

Volvo will stage the official junior match play championship in China, at Lion Lake Country Club, 2nd-5th October. Innovative changes both to the format and the qualification process will attract a field of world-class youngsters.

Volvo-event specialist Nicolas Colsaerts has been crowned the 2012 Volvo World Match Play Champion, after defeating Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell in the final at the 18th hole.

Europe’s most prestigious golf tournament, the Volvo World Match Play Championship, will take place this week as 24 of the world’s best golfers come together in Spain.
