Master Thesis- Machine learning on terrain and logged vehicle data

Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE), a business area within the Volvo Group, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, excavators, articulated haulers, road development equipment and compact equipment. We also produce articulated and autonomous haulers.

Background
At VCE a digital twin process has been implemented to be able to develop next generation services and solutions for our customers as well as to be able to perform next generation product development. This digital twin process is built on accurate vehicle simulation models and smart algorithms on the machines that send data on how the machines are operating. We are now looking for a student or students that are interested in doing a master thesis on Machine learning on terrain data and logged vehicle data to gain insights into operating conditions for an Articulated Hauler

Description of thesis work
The purpose with the thesis is to improve the customer understanding. There is a lot of data available in the form of satellite images and elevation data. The task in the thesis is to analyze elevation and satellite data for a set of fixed coordinates to determine what the hilliness is and what the road surface is, if it is asphalt, gravel, or mud. Then a machine learning model should be found from logged vehicle data such that that hilliness and road surface can be estimated for all machines.
We are looking for a student or students with a record of theoretical courses and that finds this topic interesting. Experience with python programming would be good. The student may participate in group meetings to get a feeling for what it is like to be an engineer at Volvo Construction Equipment.

Suitable background of students: Mathematics, Statistics or Machine Learning
