Thesis work: High Performance 3D-Printed Heat Exchangers​

Volvo Penta delivers engines and complete power systems for Marine applications that are designed and constructed to withstand a life at sea. In these applications, heat exchangers have a crucial functionality to ensure that the driveline achieves its desired efficiency and lifetime. By introducing additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D-printing, heat exchanger can be produced with more complex geometries (for example gyroids structure) that can maximize the heat transfer due to improved surface interaction compared to plate and shell heat exchangers. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential of AM technology and how it can be applied to design and develop the next generation of heat exchangers.​
Suitable background

ou should possess these qualifications:​

  • BSc/MSc student in any of the following fields​

  • Design and Product development​

  • Mechanical Engineering​

  • Equivalent ​

  • Knowledge in 3D CAD software​

  • Material science​

Description of thesis work:

Investigate the potential of utilizing AM technology full potential to design/develop efficient, sustainably & profitable heat exchangers used for marine applications. Focus should be on the following areas:​

  • AM method and aftertreatment needed for heat exchanger.​

  • Material selection.​

  • DFAM for heat exchangers.​

  • Develop 3D-Printed heat exchangers concepts.​
