Interview With Past Intern
Charlotte Porter is Studying Transport and Business Management at Loughborough University. Charlotte joined us in 2017-2018 as a Commercial Truck Sales Co-ordinator. We asked her to reflect on her time at Volvo and tell us what she thought of her year in industry.
Why did you apply for the programme?
I am interested in Transport and working for a manufacturer offers unique exposure to transport operators, policy makers and the effects that things such as politics have on the industry.
What were your first few weeks on the programme like?
The first few weeks of the programme were a structured introduction in to the organisation learning about the brands and the products. It was great to meet the other placement students during this time as we learnt the ropes together. The people in my department were really welcoming.
What was the support offered/working culture like?
Volvo has an open culture for learning and development. My workload and topics were adapted to my interests and what I could handle. I felt comfortable to ask for more work or say if I felt overloaded, equally if I was interested in a project in another part of the organisation I was able to get involved where appropriate.
What was your proudest moment on the Intern Programme?
During my placement I project managed the creation of the Volvo Trucks Sales Academy, a training programme aimed at sales people across the dealer network. I felt proud as the academy developed in to a high-quality resource and I saw the drive and enthusiasm from my colleagues who were involved in the project. The whole team involved should be very proud of the content that has been created.
What will you remember most about your time with Volvo?
Without a doubt I will remember the people at Volvo the most. The term ‘Volvo Family’ gets used quite regularly and it’s true. Everyone works as a team and supports and uplifts one another. I have made friends for life and met some of the most interesting people in the industry.
What advice would you give to people applying?
I would advise people applying to Volvo to do it, and do not be nervous for an interview. Relax and be yourself.
What skills and experience have you gained at Volvo and how will they help you in the future?
My time with Volvo has improved my confidence in managing projects. This will help me at University and in my future careers as I have developed skills in time management, organisation, working with a budget and liaising with suppliers.
