About the programme

All aspects of marine technology are embedded in this dedicated programme with a focus on electronics, diagnostics and computer management systems.

  • Working in a dealership – on the job training in a workshop, gaining hands on experience under the supervision of a trained mentor.
  • Two week blocks of residential training at the Volvo Penta training academy covering technology in engines, propulsion systems and the latest diagnostic techniques.  Also encompassing service, maintenance installation & repair.

Volvo Penta Training Academy

Based at Stephensons College in Coalville, Leicestershire, the fully equipped workshops allow you to work on the latest Volvo Penta engines, drivelines and propulsion systems with the most up to date equipment and tools.

Both the marine and industrial industries are constantly changing and we are committed to giving you an innovative training programme that keeps up with them.  That is why your lectures always have the latest knowledge on our products to enhance your training experience.

Whilst on residential training at the academy, you will also have access to various facilities including two campus restaurants, a fully equipped fitness suite with stations of Technogym equipment and on-site hairdressers.  You will become part of a vibrant student life where you will have many opportunities to meet new people and make friends.

Qualifications and accreditation

On successfully completing the Volvo Penta Apprentice Programme, you will have gained recognised national qualifications in either the industrial or the marine industry:

  • Marine Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 Awarding body City & Guilds
  • Industrial Land Based Service Engineer Advanced Apprenticeship Programme Level 3 Awarding body IMI

In addition, Volvo Penta holds an event where you and your family will be invited to a special graduation day to receive your certificates and possibly a special merit award at the end of your apprenticeship.

Where will I work?

In order to gain a place on the Apprenticeship programme, a local Volvo Penta dealership must sponsor you.

Here, you will be a full time employee of the dealer from day one and become part of the technical team while you train.

You will carry out your training in 16 two-week block periods on the Volvo Penta Programme at the bespoke Volvo Penta Training Academy, based at Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire. The centre is equipped with the latest Volvo Penta products and you will have use of the most up to date equipment and tools. You will also be trained by Volvo time served master technicians, with the latest Volvo knowledge.

The Volvo Penta Training Academy is located at Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire. It is a modern professional college with great facilities such as an on- site health and fitness suite and a beauty salon. Yes. All apprentices who are successful in gaining a position at a Volvo Penta dealership will be contracted and paid as a full time employee with that dealer.

If you choose to study the marine sector, you will achieve a City & Guilds Advanced Marine Engineering Level 3 Diploma.  The duration of this qualification will be 3 years.  Your fourth year will be spent developing your skills at your dealership. At the end of your fourth year, you will become a fully qualified Volvo Penta Marine Engineer.  The qualification is recognised and highly valued throughout the marine industry.

If you choose to study the industrial sector, you will achieve an Industrial Land Based Service Engineering Technician Qualification level 3 Advanced.

Team building and special events

How frequently will I be on Block, and how long is a block?
Attendance at Stephenson College will be on a block release basis. Apprentices’ will be required to attend Stephenson College on a two-week block every 6 weeks.  Accommodation and travel cost(s) will be covered by the company. Apprentices stay at the college Monday-Thursday night and return home Friday for the weekends.

Apprentices will stay with local hosts provided by Stephenson College on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis only. Accommodation is local to the college and has been carefully vetted for suitability. All relevant DBS checks have also been done by the college. All hosts are very used to having apprentices stay. Apprentices will stay in accommodation with at least one other apprentice.

Your travel arrangements will be arranged in advance by your dealership, and depending on where your dealership is based, you may be travelling by car, bus, train or air.

Driving
If apprentices choose to drive to college, you should ensure that their insurance covers for Business use. Parking is available at the college free of charge.

Air
The nearest airport is East Midlands Airport. Flights are pre booked in advance prior to your block. A free bus will be available to pick apprentices from outside arrivals at EMA.

Train
The nearest train station to the college is Leicester. Train travel will be booked in advance through the company. A free bus is available every Monday morning to collect apprentices from the train station at 10:30am. It will also take apprentices back to the station on Friday afternoon at 12:00pm.

Travel between College and Accommodation
Apprentices may choose to drive to their local accommodation each day. Alternatively, a free college bus will pick apprentices up in the morning and drop them off in the afternoon.

The training is completely free of charge and paid for by Volvo. The only cost to you is your dedication and commitment to succeed.

Mentoring/Buddy Scheme – Volvo Penta provides continuous support to their apprentices to ensure that they receive the best experience possible and develop to the best of their ability at every opportunity.

State of the art facilities - At our Volvo Penta Training Academy we have our own bespoke workshop to ensure we can replicate the workshop environment experienced in the network.

Expert Lecturers – Each of our Volvo Lecturers have all previously been a Volvo Technician, or are experienced in our industries, therefore they truly understand how apprentices need to develop and assist by delivering “Award-Winning” training.

Salary – Our apprenticeship(s) give apprentices the opportunity to earn whilst you are learning.
