Thermal Characterization & Modelling of Li-ion Cells

The temperature at which Li-ion battery cells operate has a profound effect on their performance and life. Here, modelling and simulations are valuable and versatile tools for accelerated testing, understanding, design optimization, as well as methods for the design of automatic control of batteries and battery systems. However, accurate models relies on state-of-the-art thermal characterization techniques. In addition, different cell formats (pouch, prismatic and cylindrical) lead to different challenges and opportunities when it comes to both modelling and characterization.
This work focuses on the evaluation of existing characterization methods and development of enhanced experimental methods for complete thermal characterization of Li-ion cells of different formats and sizes. Already existing test equipment will be evaluated and redesigned to allow for more accurate and versatile characterization in terms of specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity (2D/3D), and heat generation during usage. Lastly, this thesis will include thermal modelling in 2D/3D of selected cells.
We are looking for one or two creative students with both simulation skills and an experimental interest who can complement each other and work with open-ended projects. Suitable backgrounds are Master’s programs in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering (focus area: heat transfer) and Electrical Engineering (focus area: electric energy storage).
