Advanced Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) for Body In White (BIW)

INTRODUCTION
The Advanced Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) for Body In White (BIW) will be responsible for providing on time support to our internal or external customers on product and process development activities for BIW parts for projects. This is primarily conducted at the suppliers Stamping and BIW Assembly locations. You will monitor the APQP planning/execution cycle and engage with the suppliers at each critical phase. This includes visiting the suppliers engineering/development locations, the supplier manufacturing locations and continuously monitoring supplier project timing, quality data/info, first pass yield, scrap and continuous improvement opportunities in order to implement the best practices. Visits to Volvo Truck Plants for critical build events and supplier coordination activities are also required. A successful candidate must be a problem-solver at his/her core, have a strong quality & customer-focused mindset, and have the personal drive and stamina for relentless, continual improvement (personally and professionally).

Summary of Job Description:

  • Evaluation of quality loops with tooling and production suppliers
  • Controlling of the APQP-Process for supplier parts from product design until transfer to Volvo Truck Plants
  • Manage, document, and track APQP status and progress for all BIW suppliers
  • Preparation and update of the APQP status for monthly readiness checks and escalation of deviations to the project plan
  • Responsible for vendor parts until post launch gate release
  • Preparation, Validation and Approval of PPAP
  • Monitoring of design releases and impact to supplier production processes
  • Verification of Production Capacity (R@R)
  • Root cause analysis in case of technical deviations as well as definition and follow-up of necessary corrective actions
  • Securing of compliance to the Volvo Group Suppler Quality guidelines and requirements

Detailed Responsibilities
  • Guide form, fit, function, manufacturability, and sustainability through input at program development stages
  • Prevent customer satisfaction and durability issues by coordinating Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA’s), product design specifications and tolerances reviews, past problem history, and supplier development.
  • Establish and ensure conformance to engineering standards, product specifications, and highest customer expectations
  • With suppliers, assist in the development of release product/process control plans, inspection standards, quality and testing plans and instructions, visual work instructions, technical specifications, and various manufacturing validations.
  • Contain defective products through ownership of problem definition (8D’s), Root Cause Analysis (RCA’s), dispositions review, tracking of resolution effectiveness, and Containment coordination.
  • Detect non-conformances and process variations through use and standardization of SPC systems, Change Control management, and both Internal auditing and Layered Process auditing.
  • Lead cross-functional problem solving teams to drive process and product improvements; use of QA methodologies to manage and facilitate issue resolution including root cause investigations and the development, implementation and monitoring of effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Track and improve performance to internal and external quality performance metrics
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing related or manufacturing engineering or other engineering discipline from an accredited university or college
  • Must have a minimum 5-8 years of experience in product manufacturing engineering, manufacturing environments, supplier quality, plant quality, or other similar experience
  • Must have automotive experience at OEM or major Tier 1 supplier
  • Experienced in Production Techniques and Supplier Manufacturing Processes
  • Solid knowledge of Automotive based Quality methods (APQP, FMEA, MSA, PPAP, SPC, …)
  • Solid knowledge of quality problem solving methods including, but not limited to, fishbone diagrams, FMEA, process capability analysis, hypothesis testing, DoE, SPC, Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma. Additionally, evidence of the application of these methods to solve complex problems in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to understand GD&T and gaging applications/construction
  • Clear verbal, written, and presentation communication and computer skills in the English Language
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across all business levels and functions - internal and external
  • Ability and willingness to travel significantly - domestically and internationally
  • Detail oriented, effectively handle multiple priorities, have a strong quality mindset, have the ability to meet tight deadlines, and enjoy working in a team environment
