North America Purchasing is an organization within GTP supporting Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) and Mack brands on the purchasing related activities both on Automotive and indirect purchasing. Supplier Quality & Development North America is an organization within GTP representing a yearly purchased spend of $2.5B USD.
Scope - There are 3 plants in this job scope. Hagerstown. NRV – Volvo.LVO – Mack. Additionally, Volvo/Mack is currently developing another product line and when announced this new plant will also fall under the job scope

  • Mission
    As the Plant Supplier Quality Director for SQ&D GTP NA, you drive and manage performance of your team from a Quality, Delivery, Cost, Sustainability, Technical, and Risk stand point. As leader, you will be leading the plant operational agenda for Vehicles and Powertrain for SQ&D in North America. You will manage a team of SQ Managers and SQ-P’s that will be focused on containing supplier issues, communicating options, and driving resolutions for plant related supplier part quality. This includes planning for new product or new vehicle launches and special feature introductions. This position is both operational and strategic and requires hands-on leadership of people, stakeholders, and the subject matter. The group’s overall focus is creating value for the internal and external customers. You will also promote a strong collaboration between SQ&D in the region and globally thereby capitalizing on global knowledge and competence sharing within SQ&D.

    Main Responsibilities

  • Be a member in GTPNA SQ&D leadership team and in an active way and contribute to the strategic development of the department

  • Drive and lead the SQ&D teams in accordance with defined strategies and targets

  • Ensure a close interaction with suppliers by developing the team to ensure common strategy and performance expectation is driven and communicated to the suppliers

  • Strongly represent SQ&D in all plant related cross functional activities.

  • If requested, support SQ&D at sourcing board cases and pre-case cross functional activities.

  • Assume complete ownership for the suppliers’ plant part performance and the associated impacts and risks. All identified nonconformances must be dealt with immediately using a “playbook” consisting of fixed processes and escalation steps.

  • Assume complete ownership for assessing ongoing supplier’s performance using data and scorecards. Low performing suppliers must be addressed swiftly and aggressively and in alignment with Operations and Engineering.

  • Conduct monthly supplier performance reviews at each plant and deploy all tools needed to improve part containment, internal communication, and overall supplier performance. This includes monthly Supplier Days, resourcing, and visits to poor performing suppliers.

  • Drive a “zero defects” attitude across the department.

  • Actively support process harmonization and best practice sharing within GTP SQ&D and GTP NA

  • Drive actions to achieve KPI’s and support all supplier quality, capacity and cost targets

  • Secure that the lessons learned are documented and shared regularly.

  • Secure needed communication with cross-functional teams

  • Lead by example. Hands-on. Evaluate teams and individuals; elaborate the competence development plan in cooperation with the SQ&D department in the region and within the function as member of the strategic line network, and in consistency with GTP NA and others GTX functions.

  • Secure and manage resources within his/her area

  • Responsible for operating expenses

  • Work in accordance with the Volvo processes, the Code of Conduct and the Volvo Values

Competence & Experience

  • University degree in Engineering/technology and/or Business Administration

  • At least 5 years leading people with proven strong leadership skills

  • At least 5 years in an operations/manufacturing based role(s) ideally with industry experiences in automotive, medium/heavy truck, and/or other fast paced Top 100 manufacturing companies

  • At least 5 years’ experience with management of SQ&D tools in a plant environment

  • Strong demonstration of flexibility and coping skills preferably in leadership roles

  • Strong knowledge of and experience in product launch for vehicles or powertrain with a preference for supply chain process knowledge in a manufacturing environment

  • Solid experience and knowledge of Vehicles/Powertrain and related current technologies

  • Knowledgeable in current and future business trends, technology and markets

  • Able to execute in a regional and global organization

  • Must demonstrate capability to face problems and act quickly and directly. Provide direct & actionable feedback

  • Able to handle pressure, fast pace, uncertainty and the unexpected. Holds things together during tough times

  • Confidently make good decisions in line with internal stakeholders, with risks and opportunities and alternative solutions in mind

  • Able to manage diversity and offer opportunities for personal/professional development

  • Able to build an effective team with a common objective and strong morale and spirit


  • Ensure within the framework of the Purchasing manual, the mandate to fulfill the above described responsibilities on continental and global geographical breadth

  • Eliminate purchasing of material not conforming to delivery and quality demands

  • Make recommendation for approval or refusal of the sourcing cases presented in relevant Sourcing Committees or Sourcing Boards
