Manufacturing Engineer

Position Summary: As assigned, analyze and evaluate manufacturing methods, labor content, work standards, tooling, equipment and machinery utilized in order to recommend and implement lean manufacturing actions necessary to support efficient production activities and produce quality products. Program CNC machining centers, procure tooling and fixturing, set up new products and improve existing.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate production requirements and develop lean manufacturing methods and manufacturing systems to meet those requirements.
  • Generation and verification of computer numerical control machining programs in EIA, Mazatrol and using CAM software.
  • Initiate start-up of new manufacturing processes in the Lexington facility from concept to start of production.
  • Determine & initiate cost reductions in machining department.
  • Analyze and apply new manufacturing technologies to implement cost savings and quality improvements.
  • Provide problem solving support to production, maintenance and quality teams.
  • Provide quotation of tooling and labor for machining operations.
  • Review tooling available and/or required and recommend design changes as indicated.
  • Evaluate existing equipment, machinery and material handling systems and recommend modifications or purchases as necessary.
  • Evaluate and implement changes in work place layouts, methods, fixtures and tools to reduce time, eliminate hazards, improve workflow, implement design changes and/or provide cost reduction.
  • Assist in preparing justification for purchase of tooling and equipment.
  • Assist in planning, preparing of routings and acquisition of tooling and equipment for new products or models.
  • Implement continuous improvement ideas (V.I.P. – Volvo Improvement Process).
  • Develop, design and implement material packaging that supports lean manufacturing for all product lines.
  • Participate in analysis, setting & revision of equipment and/or equipment work standards.
  • Design and implement quality assurance systems and procedures for production gaging, tool wear, machine capability and statistical analysis.
  • Provide assistance in controlling and maintaining components in MCS Bill of Material.
  • Prepare and maintain job work instructions, tool specification and assist in operator training.
  • Provide/maintain department/plant lay-outs in AutoCAD.
  • Participate in analysis, setting and revision of equipment and/or equipment work
standards.
  • Perform other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned by management to support Volvo Penta goals and objectives.

Skills and Knowledge Required
  • Proficient in ISO 9000 & 14000, OHSAS 18001 standards
  • Proficient in time studies & documentation
  • Intimate knowledge of operating and programming CNC lathes, mills and machining equipment
Education and Experience
  • B.S. Degree in Engineering preferred or equivalent maintenance experience
  • 3-5 years of CNC experience preferred
  • Demonstrates an acute knowledge and experience with CNC lathe, vertical and horizontal machining centers
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of tooling fixtures and mathematical calculations
  • Experienced in setting up and manufacturing new products in all phases - from conception through production
