Automation and integration of AGC and portal robot

Background
Volvo GTO Research & Technology Development is responsible for investigations, development and demonstration of new technologies for future production methods and systems. Some of the activities and results are used in the implementation of a “Smart Factory” test and demonstration environment. This thesis work will contribute to the development of this test bed.
Description of the thesis work:
The future component and assembly systems will need flexible automation solutions to support operators in the tasks they do best – e.g. the value adding work to make the assembly operations. That mean that other tasks, for example material handling and logistics is opt for automation. One typical process is when a robot perform kitting of parts (pick-and-place process) to select the specific part and components required for a unique product variant, which then is delivered to the operator at an assembly station. The tasks for the master thesis work is to develop a solution for integration of a portal robot and an autonomous guided robot/carrier in a collaborative environment with humans.
The assignment of this thesis includes:
  • Development of solution for docking and positioning of the AGC in the portal robot work area to collect the material kits
  • Develop the solution for the safety system required for this collaborative environment
  • Programming of the portal robot for kitting operations
  • Integration of the AGC and the portal robot to perform the tasks together
The goal is that the proposed solution can be simulated and validated before the physical implementation is decided.
