Master thesis: 1-D combustion modeling of a low carbon fuel

With increasing ill effects from global warming, popular sources of energy in the automotive industry such as diesel and gasoline are being considered to be replaced as energy sources with alternative fuels. Fuels with lesser or zero carbon compounds, which can combust with similar thermodynamics as a gasoline or diesel fuel, are increasingly becoming popular since they can emit lower or zero carbon compounds.
Volvo Penta continuously strive to find better, sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.
We are looking for motivated master students who are passionate in simulation modeling and helping us to investigate such sustainable solutions.
Suitable background
  • Masters in Chemical/Automotive or similar engineering areas
  • Experience in using 1-D tools such as GT-Suite/AVL is a merit
  • General interest in research and thermodynamics
Description of thesis work
The main task would be to investigate combustion modeling using commercially available software, for example: GT-Suite.
The deliverables include
  • Develop/calibrate a combustion model to replicate the combustion characteristics of a low/zero carbon fuel based on theory
  • Investigate modeling the emissions from such a combustion system
  • Recommend changes to further develop the combustion model to improve quality of the model prediction
