PROGNOSTICS OF HYDRAULIC COMPONENTS IN CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY

Background of thesis project
Volvo Construction Equipment, a division of Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, haulers, excavators, road machinery, and compact machines. To maintain a leading position, it is important to develop innovative products with high quality and, at the same time, high energy-efficient hydraulics. To further develop machine quality and functionality, prognostics of components is seen as a key enabler, preventing machine downtime and optimizing service using flexible predictable service intervals instead of fixed.
Suitable background
Candidates should be in the final year of their Master’s studies. Candidates are expected to have:
  • Bachelor Degree in Hydraulics, Mechatronics or other relevant technical field of study
  • Own drive, open mind and ability to analyze
Description of thesis work
The aim of this thesis is to develop prognostic strategies for different hydraulic components e. g accumulators, filters, valves, pumps and motors. The work will involve creating a simulation model of the hydraulic system for initial prognostic strategy development. Implementation of the strategy will then be performed in one of Volvo CE’s test cells, or on an actual wheel loader/articulated hauler. The students are required to be skilled in dynamic simulation, control theory, hydraulics and machine elements. Some work with electronic installation of the control and measurement system will also be required by the students.
The main activities are:
  • Perform a literature study in the field of interest
  • Communicate with relevant suppliers
  • Model and simulate the system
  • Design a prognostic strategy in simulation environment
  • Implement and validate the prognostic algorithms in test environment or machine
A full report of the work carried out will be prepared and presented to staff at Volvo CE. It will be required for the student to perform the thesis at Volvo CE facilities in Eskilstuna.
