Gary, Indiana-based Pozzo Truck Center Inc. recently celebrated its 95th year as a Mack Trucks dealer. William A. Pozzo Sr. (top left) founded Pozzo Truck Center in 1921 and built its first facility (top right) on the corner of 11th and Madison in Gary, Indiana. The current location on East 15th Street (bottom) opened in 1972.

Founded in 1921 by William A. Pozzo Sr., the business was opened after a Mack parts and repair facility in Gary, Indiana closed. Pozzo, an Italian immigrant who was a mechanic at the facility and also raced with the Fiat team at the Indianapolis 500, sold some bonds to build a building at 11th and Madison in Gary. In 1972, the business moved to 3001 E. 15th St., Gary, where it still resides.

“Pozzo Truck Center has been serving Mack customers almost as long as Mack Trucks has been in business,” said Jonathan Randall, senior vice president of sales for Mack Trucks North America. “On behalf of the entire Mack family, congratulations to Pozzo on this impressive achievement.”

Following the success of the East 15th Street location, Pozzo added two other locations – one in South Chicago Heights, Illinois in 1986 and the other in South Bend, Indiana in November 2016.

“Mack is synonymous with tough, reliable trucks and integrated powertrains,” said Jud Salmon, who owns the dealership with his wife Linda, William Pozzo’s granddaughter. “The integrated powertrain was a great selling point because Mack could control the quality of the components in the truck with its balanced design. Mack’s reputation helped our reputation as a dealer.”

The 15th Street location has 16 service bays and is a full-service facility operating from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The location also offers 24/7 breakdown service.

The South Chicago Heights facility features 10 service bays and is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The South Bend site, which operates as MTE Sales & Service, is open 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
