I create new things

“The car is built from scratch. We start off with an empty room and a budget; one year later, a fast race car is created”. That’s the extraordinary challenge raised by Jayan Mistry and fellow students. He is the winner of our photo contest on innovation.

The story behind the winning picture
“This picture was taken when our team members were building a new car for the Formula Student 2017 UK event, taking place at the Silverstone circuit. Formula Student is a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers. Students must design and build a single-seat racing car. They come from different backgrounds and are brought together by a common passion for cars, engineering, racing and the automotive industry.” shares Jayan Mistry from Leicester, UK, winner of the Volvo Group photo challenge “I create new things”.

Crafting new friendships
“The car is built from scratch. We start off with an empty room and a budget; one year later, a fast race car is created. Everything from the chassis, to the suspension and bodywork is designed, manufactured and assembled by students.

For me, this photo illustrates Creation not only of the race car but also of relationships between teammates. Building a race car isn't easy and sometimes there are rough patches. The team members are always supporting each other and solving problems together. As a result of the journey, new friendships and bonds are created”.

Getting closer to the Volvo world
“I have been following the Volvo Ocean Race regularly since I took part in the photo contest. The results and sheer scale of the race in terms of time and distance very much blew my mind.

I am passionate of the automotive industry. Entering the photo contest has also been the opportunity to know more about the Volvo Group. I have to say I am impressed to see how many industries the group branches out into”.
