New report: A state of the art review of global policy targets and strategies

It is disheartening to consider how far we are from cutting the rise in road fatalities, as revealed by the most recent WHO status report on road safety, despite being quite aware of the tools at our disposal, as demonstrated by the relative success of countries like Sweden, Norway, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Is the lack of progress due to a lack of funds, vehicle safety standards, enforcement, political commitment, or something else – and is the present situation of stagnation inescapable?

Well, depending on what region you consider, we are of course in need of improving most of these aspects. However, what I also think is lacking to mobilize fully, both public and private stakeholders, is a convincing narrative for what to achieve and how to get there – that is, what decisions to take in the intermediate steps to ensure progress.

It is exceedingly difficult to fill this gap and maybe it is not even feasible to create such a detailed scenario. Still, the need of a better storyline including a clear path for how to achieve progress to convince the sceptics is sorely needed, so we will try anyway, and at the very least we create new learnings.

The new report, which is available for download in the link below, concludes the first phase of our work towards a robust model of road safety progress and serves as a review of the state of the art of the methods and frameworks used in road safety strategy and policy work today.

It has been a highly inspiring work together with Jac Wismans, Ingrid Skogsmo, and Magnus Granström at SAFER.
