“Volvo Group is part of my DNA”

After applying for a position in 1995, Ronette Stoner’s long journey with Volvo Group has taken her from the US to China, Belgium and Sweden. Her career in finance has involved taking a wide range of roles and challenges. “I can do anything, go anywhere, just as long as I’m brave and willing to try,” she says.
Ronette Stoner- Vice President Finance Planning & Analysis at Volvo Construction Equipment

In 1995 I saw a job advertisement in a local paper for an entry-level position as a financial analyst at Mack Trucks, United States. I applied and got the job. This is how I joined the Volvo Group. Back then, I thought I would need to change companies every two to five years, in order to develop my career. 25 years later, I am still here!

I have stayed in the company so long because I am always finding new challenges. As the Volvo Group expanded over the years by acquiring other companies it created opportunities for me. In 2001 I discovered what it meant to move from a local plant perspective to a regional manufacturing division and in 2007, I moved into a global business line with Volvo Construction Equipment. In 2014, I took on my biggest challenge yet: Finance and Business Control for Volvo CE Sales Region China.

This was my first time living outside the US and I went to a country and part of the business in crisis mode. It was stressful and exciting, but oh so rewarding. Perhaps the most important thing I learned then was that leadership is transferable – people have the same wants and needs, no matter the location.  After 2 years in China, I had the opportunity to move to Volvo CE Headquarters in Belgium and then Sweden.

My latest career move was earlier this year in Sweden taking up the position of Chief Financial Officer for Volvo Autonomous Solutions, a new Volvo Group company launched in January 2020. It is thrilling to be part of a company that will transform our society with efficient, sustainable and safe autonomous solutions.

The opportunities in Volvo Group are many and varied. Over the years I’ve always taken the chance to make a difference and my efforts were recognized. I gave and received feedback that further enabled my career development. I have tremendous trust in our leaders and believe that if you are willing to take the risk, they are ready to help you grow.

At times it felt lonely when I was the only woman in the room but I never felt that I counted less. It is very important for me to pay it forward, so I am an active coach and mentor to both women and men, helping them to grow into leadership positions. Making a difference is what gives me meaning and purpose every day.
