PROGNOSTICS OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS IN ELECTRIC AUTONOMOUS HAULERS

Thesis Proposal
This master thesis (30 ECTS) is suitable for one or two Masters students that are completing their studies in mechatronics/hydraulics or equivalent. Desired start date is Jan-Feb 2022.
Background
Volvo Construction Equipment, a division of Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, haulers, excavators, road machinery, and compact machines. To maintain a leading position, it is important to develop innovative products with high quality and, at the same time, energy-efficient hydraulics.
To further develop machine quality and functionality, prognostics of system and components is seen as a key enabler, preventing machine downtime, and optimizing service using flexible predictable service intervals instead of fixed. This is of interest specially in Volvos electric autonomous haulers when there is no driver to notice problems with the machine.
Project Summary
The aim of this thesis is to develop prognostic strategies for the different hydraulic functions of the autonomous hauler, e. g steering, braking, tipping and suspension. The work will involve creating a simulation model of the hydraulic system for initial prognostic strategy development. Implementation of the strategy will then be performed in one of Volvo CE’s autonomous haulers.
Knowledge in dynamic simulation, control theory and hydraulics is required. The thesis will also involve hardware installation on the hauler to perform the measurements.
The main activities are:
a) Perform a literature study and system identification
b) Model and simulate the system
c) Design a prognostic strategy in simulation environment
d) Implement and validate the prognostic algorithms on an autonomous hauler
A full report of the work will be prepared and presented to staff at Volvo CE. It will be required for the student to perform the thesis at Volvo CE facilities in Eskilstuna.
