Master Thesis Work - Optimal GenSet

Thesis Background
Volvo Penta is providing engines to power generation building OEMs with a range from 75kW to 800kW. Some power generating GenSet’s are in use 24/7 why the fuel consumption is probably the most important feature. GenSet’s are used in many different versions, however to most common are stand by, peak shaving, remote power generation and emergency. The high fuel consumption opens for exclusive technical solutions since the return on investment is relatively short.

Thesis scope of work
Aim

Object for this thesis is to make a study of all existing technologies that potentially could improve fuel consumption and make simulations to build the best combined technology add-on’s in a balanced business case.
The target is to come up with ideas to be investigated by simulations, ideally validated by physical testing and designed as a 3D model.

First step
Get to know and analyze the setup for benchmark. Information about this will be provided by Volvo Penta, however most of the information is available in public domains and at external companies.

Second step
Design system layouts and compare combinations, based on demarcations select the most promising solution, simulate, if possible perform physical tests and design a 3D-model including the most common GenSet applications.

Third step
Detailed design of components, cost estimations, total system layout, simulations etc. providing a reasonable material for a company decision.

Qualifications & Required Documents
Master students Product Development & Automation & Mechatronics.
Knowledge of simulation tools.
Knowledge of engine functionality, components, combustion, gas exchange.
Technologies such as but not limited to: Turbo compound, Variable Geometry Turbo, Free Valve Timing systems. EGR system layouts, Friction improvements from coatings on engine components.

The Systems & Components, Analysis department consists of 15 engineers with deep knowledge of systems such as air management, fuel injection equipment, marine propulsion, piston and liners, oil systems and cooling systems. The department work in close collaboration with other departments such as CAE and new technology.
