CFD study for optimized cooling performance
At Volvo Penta engines operate in a vast number of applications. In our industrial branch there are numerous applications which lacks ram effect from vehicle movement. These applications are for instance material handlers and gensets. This puts a high demand on our cooling systems. We see a great need for efficient cooling systems both today and for future needs, especially since AB Volvo have decided to invest in Fuel Cells for future zero emission vehicles which requires even more cooling.
Thesis scope of work
The objective of this thesis is to study the potential of directing the fan flow in a cooling package. The target is to come up with ideas that could increase the cooling performance. These ideas should be investigated virtually using the CFD code STAR-CCM+ and, if time permits, validated by physical testing.
A literature study should be performed to find existing studies in this field. The students should then come up with an initial design to be evaluated.
Perform a CFD study to evaluate the initial design and iterate new designs to find the design with the highest potential to increase cooling performance.
If time permits and fan rigs are available, perform physical tests to verify an improved design.
