Intern: Freight Forwarding (Spring 2023)

The Freight Forwarding internship position will be responsible for working with various Volvo Business Areas, Internal partners, Freight Forwarders and Carriers. Activities including, but not limited to export shipments in support of international manufacturing with use of Volvo’s Trade Management system, additional systems to support export processes, statistical analysis in support of operational support within the Freight
Forwarding Team in Dublin, VA.

Role Mission:
The Freight Forwarding internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a professional environment, and to promote the student's career goals through contact with professionals in their field of study.

The internship experience enables students to participate in professional activities for Volvo Group Production Logistics by working on projects for the Freight Forwarding Team. Internships are structured learning experiences where interns and full time professionals work together on projects within their selected area of the organization.

The internship allows students to integrate their International Business/Logistics knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo Group Production Logistics.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Assist with research and data collection in support of international shipments and/or deviations
  • Support Freight Forwarding Team within assigned export/ import activities
  • Assist with quantitative analysis of cross dock volumes, export shipment activity, and Trade Management System reporting.
  • Perform reviews of export shipment files for accuracy & completeness
  • Assist with operational project activities in support of inbound and outbound operations.
Professional Objectives:
  • Weekly Writing Assignments - Brief written summaries of the learning experiences and project updates will be required.
  • Project Presentations - Formal project presentations will be required to be presented to peers, management, and senior leaders within the organization.
Education Required:
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in International Logistics at an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours prior to the start of the internship
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • US Customs operational experience preferred.
Skill Sets Required:
  • Applicants should be proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Applicants should be proficient in use of web based tools, access database, and mainframe internal systems
  • Strong communication skills with both internal and external parties.
  • Multi-tasking and working in cross-functional teams to meet deadlines efficiently
Expected Commitment

This internship will require up to 30 hours per week during the Spring 2023 semester, with the specific working schedule to be agreed upon with the hiring manager.
