Master Thesis: Structural Dynamics with Multi-Objective Optimization

Background

Welcome to combination station! Given the large variations of truck users in different fields and industries, the possibilities are almost endless when combining different components for today’s trucks. Adding the increasing demand of having an eco-friendly transport solution, the possible combinations are increasing.

From a structural dynamic point of view, it is a challenge to identify the dimensioning factors when designing the complete vehicles. Different features may have conflicting objectives and the problem quickly grows in size, with a lot of possible variables to evaluate. Especially as varying factors are introduced both as truck design/components, load from the ground and how the vehicle is used by the end customer.

A way of navigating in a sea of combinations is to introduce multi-objective optimization. It is thus of interest to add the optimization as a complement to the dynamic calculations and study how such a method could be used in the development of transport solutions.

Objective
The students should, using CAE tools and scripting, develop an optimization stream for vehicle dynamic features (durability/ride comfort/handling) and propose a strategy how this can be implemented in the vehicle development.

The thesis work will include:

  • Study robustness and sensitivity for existing solutions related to vehicle dynamic features.
  • Establish methods for identification of differentiation opportunities.
  • Develop an optimization stream with suitable objectives and variables.
  • Propose a strategy for differentiation and technical solutions on vehicle level.

Who are you?

We are looking for two master program students in engineering with specialization in Applied Mechanics, Physics or equivalent. Knowledge in vehicle dynamics and optimization are beneficial. The work will be carried out at Volvo GTT in Gothenburg, in collaboration with Esteco. The work will be written in English and the main tools used for the thesis will be Nastran, ANSA, modeFRONTIER and to some extend Matlab and/or Python.
