Introduction
Mechanical and Simulation Engineering is a department in Volvo Construction Equipment Wheel Loader organization in Eskilstuna. The group focuses on different areas within simulation and mechanical engineering. We are 16 people in the department and even though we work in different fields we always support and help each other.
The foundation in our work is trust and passion in what we do. The work is usually organized in cross functional projects small or large with other departments across the Volvo world. In such work where every team member is a part of the puzzle teamwork and communication are crucial in the daily project work to create an open and friendly working environment.

Background
3 dimensional wheel loader models are used mainly to make performance analysis to support concept evaluation in early development phases. The models are also used as virtual prototypes for the control system development team. Today the complete Wheel Loader is modelled and simulated in Matlab/Simulink/Simscape. One of the main reasons for using Matlab/Simulink/Simscape is that the control system development is done in Matlab/Simulink.
Modelica is an interesting alternative to Simulink and the goal for this project is to evaluate the potential of this software e.g., if the model will have shorter simulation time and/or easier to build/update.

Description
The main task of the thesis work is to create a complete vehicle model in Modelica of a wheel loader, and evaluate the impact on that control code still will be developed in Matlab /Simulink.
The work consists of four main parts:
  • Evaluate which Modelica software that should be used
  • Create a complete 3D model of the Wheel Loader (e.g., powertrain, chassi, wheels, hydraulic system). Also, the driver and the environment need to be modelled.
  • Evaluate how the model works compared to the existing model in Matlab/Simulink/Simscape.
  • Evaluate the impact on that the control system will continue to be developed in Matlab/Simulink.
Qualifications
The student/students should have a background in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics. An interest in calculation or simulation is essential.
