Background of thesis project
A wheel loader can in certain conditions get into an oscillative pitch movement. That is uncomfortable and risks spilling bucket load. The traditional way of solving this, is by what Volvo calls boom suspension system. That system is used to smoothen the ride for the driver, by adding flexibility between the loader body and the lifting unit.
In a wheel loader with electric propulsion system, the response time and precision should be enough to be able to dampen the pitch movement by a modulation of tractive force. We need your help to achieve it!
Description of thesis work
Design of an active traction control to aid the boom suspension system in an electrical wheel loader.
The purpose of this study will be to design, simulate and test, a complimentary active traction control to aid the boom suspension system for our electrical machines.
The thesis will start by studying the current hydro-mechanical system, in order to understand the system and machine behavior. The next step would be to design a new system, where the damping motion is actively controlled by modulate the traction force, instead of relying on passive damping with accumulators in the hydraulic system.
In order to develop the new system, you must simulate, and test the new damping system in our complete machine model. The goal is then to test it in an actual wheel loader.
The thesis will be supervised by Volvo CE and the work will mainly be conducted in Eskilstuna. We prefer if two students apply and preform this thesis together. We believe you are focused on control technology and/or driveline systems.
- Detailed study of the current hydro mechanical solution.
- Literature study of previous work of active dampening.
- The study shall produce a model using Matlab Simulink.
- Test the new system in a wheel loader.
- Analysis and comparison of simulated and real-world test results.
