Distortions from different heat treatment methods

Background of thesis project:

Analyze of bevel gear geometry distortions from different heat treatment methods (Low pressure carburizing and case hardening)

The Volvo Marine portfolio in Köping contains a large variety of parts, pinions gears and shafts. Todays heat treatment process results in distortions on the gears that varies over time. This create a constant challenge to find the correct dimensions of a work piece to compensate for the distortions after heat treatment.
The aim of this project is to analyze and conclude how different heat treament methods affect and deform gears. Thus give us an understanding to choose the method that results in the most cost effective machining process after heat treatment.

Suitable background:
  • Metallurgical, Mechanical, Production Engineering or similar background.
Description of thesis work:

Create a simulation model through empirical and literature data that is able to estimate how hardening distortions occur and to what extent. The data is retrieved from two methods, Low pressure carburizing and case hardening.
The assignment includes:
  • Literature study
  • Collect information of current heat treatment process
  • Through empirical data show how different methods affect distortion
  • Document and present results
