Master Thesis: Piston REMAN

Background of thesis project
In order to improve the circularity of the pistons used in our internal combustion engine we need to investigate new ways to remanufacture.
Suitable background
Of students: Mechanical or Material Technology
Description of thesis work
Challenges to overcome to be able improve the re-manufacturability of used pistons.
During this Thesis we would you to like to investigate, identify and compare possible solutions to the two challenges that we have:
  1. Wear of the Upper compression groove
    • The top piston ring acts as both a compression and final oil control ring. It must form a seal between the sides and the ring groove and between its face and the cylinder wall.
    • A poor seal will lead to both oil consumption & blow-by increase.
  2. Removal of the Carbon build-up in the piston cooling gallery
    • Oil travels through piston cooling gallery and transfer temperature from the piston to oil to avoid erosion & cracks on the piston.
    • Carbon build-up in the cooling gallery acts as an insulator keeping piston at high temperatures leading to erosion and cracks.
The target is to identify different solutions to the two challenges above. The different solutions should be compared with the purpose to identify the best option to be able to apply manufacturability of the piston. The work shall include both the technical aspects of the repair methods and the environmental and financial benefits of reusing the piston.
The thesis work will focus on Engineering aspects of the method to evaluate its use on remanufacturing of the piston.
