Master Thesis - Low voltage electric system modelling and simulation

Background of thesis project:
For Volvo Penta’s vehicle transmission solutions there is a wide range of engine sizes in the product-portfolio, thus requiring different configurations- and scales of the electrical power system (i.e. alternator, starter, batteries). The wide product-portfolio within the company also implies the need of several tests associated with the products for experimentation, verification, and validation. However, Volvo Penta’s testing of electrical power performance is today performed in real-life test-cells, which implies large usage of resources. Volvo Penta realizes a major potential in improving efficiency, therefore a suitable computer modelling for electric system is needed.
Suitable background
Master students Electric Power Engineering, Mechatronics
Knowledge of: electromobility, electric system design and parametrization, Matlab-Simulink.

Description of thesis work
Develop and provide an electric system model for vehicle electrical power systems 12V/24V, viable with different component specific input-parameters including batteries, loads and power sources e.g alternators and/or solar panels.

First step
Get to know and analyze the existing electric system set up. Perform and build a generic electric system model for 12V and 24V. Evaluate the most important parameters for the electric system.

Second step
Model shall be able to be flexible with adjustable system parameters. They can present several pre-settings to meet existing applications e.g marine, industrial, off road.
