Modelling of a Virtual Sensor using Machine Learning

Virtual Testing at Volvo Penta is important as the demand for more efficient product development is increasing. At the heart of Virtual Testing is the HiL-rigs, which mimics the test cells, and offer upsides in time and diversified testing. However, modelling and simulation of the emissions in Real-Time is too demanding. Due to the complexity of these signals, there is a need of running it offline, parallel to the Real-Time simulations.

Qualifications & Required Documents

Master students in Data Science, Computer Science, Physics or Automation and Mechatronics.
Knowledge of: Machine Learning, modelling and simulation, Python, Keras and TensorFlow or similar

Description of thesis work
The idea for this Thesis is to create a Virtual Sensor for the complex emission signals using Machine Learning, that can run in parallel on a server, being feed inputs from the Real-Time simulations. The results from the Machine Learning-model are later merged with the results from the Real-Time simulation providing a more realistic outcome.

The virtual testing department consists of an agile team of five engineers with cross functional knowledge on both simulations, electrical engineering, and machine learning. The team works with developing and defining the ways of working with virtual testing at Volvo Penta, providing a simulation platform for the testing engineers.
