HYDROGEN FUEL CELL IN VOLVO WHEEL LOADERS

Thesis Proposal
This master thesis (30 ECTS) is suitable for two students that are completing their studies in Design and Product development / Mechanical Engineering / Automotive Engineering or equivalent. Desired start date is Jan-Feb 2022.
Background
Volvo Construction Equipment, a division of Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, haulers, excavators, road machinery, and compact machines. We are here to make a difference and want to offer sustainable transport & infrastructure solutions. Sustainable power is the game changer and hydrogen fuel cell development form a part of Volvo Group’s overall electromobility ambition to be carbon neutral by 2040.
Project Summary
The aim of this thesis is to develop a digital installation model of a hydrogen fuel cell installation in a wheel loader. The work will involve creating a Catia packaging model, Cooling system requirement and dimensioning, analysis of machine balance.
Knowledge in Catia, or equivalent CAD program, and knowledge in thermodynamics is beneficial.
The main activities are:
  • Perform a literature study
  • Create an installation package with a hydrogen fuel cell system incl energy storage
  • Cooling system calculation and dimensioning
  • Center of gravidity evaluation (Machine balance analysis)
  • Patent study
  • Competitor study
  • Comparison analysis of conventional, fully electrified and hydrogen fuel cell machines

A full report of the work will be prepared and presented to staff at Volvo CE. It will be required for the students to perform the thesis at Volvo CE facilities in Eskilstuna.
