Data analytics and visualization to improve quality performance

There is a strong focus in industry for quality improvement and at the same time an upward trend on product customization for the benefit of the customer, which brings a product and process variation control challenge for manufacturing. Based on this trend it is important that industry in manufacturing plants build a robust variation control process at the workstation level to secure significant quality improvements. The focus for this investigation is use data analytics, visualization, and standardization to identify operational deviations, control critical product and process parameters at the workstation level to reduce operational deviations in order to improve quality indicators.

Description of thesis work
The purpose of this research is to run data analytics case studies at several Volvo Truck assembly plants at shop floor team level. These case studies include job observations, data collection, data visualization and analysis to support daily problem-solving process in order to improve quality performance indicators. Some expected activities:
  • Drive data collection, data visualization, job observations and formulate the documentation necessary for further analysis and improvement actions
  • Literature studies
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis investigations with shop floor teams at the assembly plant
  • Use data analytics methods to improve lead time of data capturing and visualization.
