Thesis – Modeling&Simulation of thermal behavior of Fuel Cell Systems

Background
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell electric vehicles (FCEV) will be instrumental in de-carbonizing the heavy-duty transport fleet. The fuel cell systems team at Volvo PSD is working on securing a fuel cell system product that meets our customer demands and Volvo standards. The reliable operation in extreme climates is essential to the success of our FCEV product. It has been well documented that fuel cells undergo degradation during the start-up process in freezing conditions.
The objective of this thesis work is securing a reliable thermal model of the fuel cell system to study the effect of the environment on the thermal characteristics of the fuel cell stack. The model will be used to understand the thermal evolution of the fuel cell stack during start-up and after shut-down processes in freezing temperatures. The model will be used for the simulation and investigation of the effectiveness of the proposed mitigation strategies, and to explore novel strategies during freeze start-ups.

Expected Outcomes:
  • Validated thermal model of the Fuel Cell System
  • Simulation and analysis of FCS thermal behavior during targeted operating conditions.
  • Simulation and analysis of existing and novel mitigation strategies.
  • Thesis document
Prerequisites:
  • A good understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer concepts.
  • Familiarity with GT-Suite, Python, and MATLAB simulation environments is an advantage.
