Our Pledges

We walk the talk

We are committed to being at the forefront of the industry in producing dialogue with policymakers and societal stakeholders to shape the future of mobility. The Volvo Group is a signatory of the UN Global Compact. It further recognizes and supports several international conventions and principles, including the International Bill of Human Rights, the ILO eight fundamental conventions, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

First Mover Coalition

Volvo Group is one of the founding members of the First Movers Coalition (FMC), a global initiative harnessing the purchasing power of companies to decarbonize seven hard-to-abate industrial sectors that currently account for 30% of global emissions: Aluminum, Aviation, Chemicals, Concrete, Shipping, Steel, and Trucking, along with innovative Carbon Removal technologies.

The 50+ companies who make up the coalition seek to send a powerful market signal to commercialize zero-carbon technologies. The First Movers Coalition’s unique approach assembles ambitious corporate purchasing pledges across the heavy industry and long-distance transport sectors responsible for a third of global emissions. For these sectors to decarbonize at the speed needed to keep the planet on a 1.5-degree pathway, they require low-carbon technologies that are not yet competitive with current carbon-intensive solutions, but must reach commercial scale by 2030 to achieve net-zero emissions globally by 2050.

To jump-start the market, the coalition’s members commit in advance to purchasing a proportion of the industrial materials and long-distance transportation they need from suppliers using near-zero or zero-carbon solutions, despite the premium cost.

In addition to the advance purchase commitments that FMC members have made, the members also pledge to work together to address roadblocks towards securing supply of required low-carbon technologies by 2030. The Coalition will connect members with financial players, suppliers, and other value chain partners. In doing so, the FMC will further ensure the development of key technologies and power our net-zero future for years to come.

Volvo Group has joined the the Clean Energy Partnership - a strong industry partnership in pursuit of a goal: to establish green mobility with hydrogen and fuel cells.

The partnership unites technology, petroleum and energy companies, gas producers, auto manufacturers and suppliers working together across industries and sectors to set standards across all modes of transport to create impact, and work towards effectively reducing CO2 emissions from road transportation.

The Clean Energy Partnership sees hydrogen as a key enabler to achieve this, and is devoting itself to new modes of transport and incorporating aspects such as energy, storage technologies, and logistics, to an even greater extent. Sharing both experience and knowledge, the partnership is designed to help shape the framework conditions and advise industry, users, and politicians, by pinpointing the current challenges and talking about the great potential of hydrogen.

Call on Carbon

As a signatory of Call on Carbon created by the Climate Leadership Coalition, we work together to display an overwhelming support for governments to ramp up their measures on climate investments and carbon pricing. We encourage governments to introduce effective carbon pricing instruments consistent with their net-zero targets set in the Paris Agreement and align these with other countries where appropriate, create a stable and predictable investment environment and finalise the rules for the international market mechanism under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

CALSTART’s Drive to Zero

CALSTART’s Drive to Zero campaign aims to accelerate the growth of global zero- and near-zero-emission commercial vehicle space, with the aim of becoming commercially competitive by 2025 and dominant by 2040 in specific vehicle segments and regions. Drive to Zero is built upon a technology strategy for change called the Beachhead Strategy - a strategy that identifies the commercial vehicle market segments where zero- and near-zero technologies are most likely to succeed and help drive growth in other segments. As a partner, we work with the others to innovate and prepare the early market for zero-emission trucks, buses and equipment.

Charge Forward to Zero Emissions Transportation

As the transportation sector is responsible for more than 10% of total global greenhouse gas emissions, we must accelerate towards zero-emissions vehicles. Therefore, the Volvo Group, along with other like-minded cities, regions, states, companies and countries who share ambition to realize zero emissions in the road transport, commit to supporting the increase of EVs by accelerating the timely deployment of related charging infrastructure. We come together to address gaps in national and local investment and planning, tackle bottlenecks, and identify the needed quantitative and qualitative targets for the deployment of suitable EV charging infrastructures.
