Master Thesis – Simulation using Discrete Element modelling

Volvo Construction Equipment, a business area within the Volvo Group, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, excavators, articulated haulers, road development equipment and compact equipment. Center for development and manufacturing of Volvo Articulated and Autonomous Haulers is located in Braås, Sweden. We are committed to building a better tomorrow and are proud of our innovative spirit resulting in world leading products, autonomous haulers and the first vehicle built with fossil- free steel and much more, always with a great team spirit and collaboration.

Description:

The purpose of the thesis work is to setup and evaluate DEM simulation (Discrete element method), coupled with an MBS (Multibody simulation) flexible body model for the load case when material is loaded into a load carrying body.

The DEM simulation software can be used as a tool to represent the interaction of particles with their environment. The interaction with the surrounding environment is often modelled as rigid in DEM simulations. When simulating a stone drop into a load carrying body load case, the body stiffness is of importance to accurately simulate the event. The flexibility of the load carrying body in the MBS model is represented by modal flexibility. Data between DEM- and MSB solver is exchanged in a limited number of nodes.
The scope of the work includes the setup of the DEM simulation with the co-simulation interface with an MBS model and evaluation of alternative setups of the co-simulation interface as well as computational demand.

Suitable Background: Mechanical Engineering or similar, applied mathematics, experience in Simulink and MATLAB.
Thesis Level: Master
Language: Documentation in English
Starting Date: Spring 2024
Number of Students: 1-2
