Technology award for dual clutch for trucks

The I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission uses technology from the sports car industry to lift the driveability in heavy trucks to a whole new level. It is the first dual-clutch transmission for serial produced heavy vehicles, and the engineers responsible for the solution will receive Volvo’s technology award for 2014.

Dual clutch technology means that two gears can be engaged simultaneously and which one is active is controlled by the clutches. Changing from one active gear to another is done in an instant by simply switching from one clutch to the other. The greatest advantage of the I-Shift Dual Clutch is the uninterrupted power transfer.

The torque is maintained and the truck does not lose speed while shifting gears, which results in more comfortable and efficient driving. Dual clutch technology was first introduced in racing cars and later also in passenger- and sports cars. The I-Shift Dual Clutch has now been launched by Volvo as the first transmission of its kind for serial produced heavy vehicles.

“When we let customers test this transmission, truck drivers were so happy that they were reluctant to hand back the truck afterwards. It feels great to have developed something that is so useful,” says Lars Simonsson, one of the award winners.

The I-Shift Dual Clutch was launched by Volvo Trucks last year, and the technology was developed by engineers in the Volvo Group’s development organization for trucks. The award winners are Klas Bergström, Lennart Brusved, Anders Hedman, Lars Simonsson and Lars-Erik Theodorsson, and the award will be presented in conjunction with AB Volvo’s Annual General Meeting on April 1.

“Once again, the Volvo Group’s engineers have developed sophisticated vehicle technology that will make life easier for our customers. This technology shows the power of innovation and our ability to lead the development for heavy trucks. I am very proud of what this team has achieved together with their colleagues, and I hope they are as proud as I am,” says Torbjörn Holmström, Executive Vice President Group Trucks Technology and Volvo Group Chief Technology Officer.
