Italian styling and Volvo Penta’s cutting-edge IPS combine in Absolute Yachts’ new 50Fly boat

Italian boat-builder Absolute Yachts has selected Volvo Penta’s intelligent Inboard Performance System (IPS) for its new 50Fly motor yacht.

In harnessing the concepts usually found in larger motor yachts, Absolute Yachts has created a new high-end, three-cabin vessel for the discerning leisure boater. In doing so, the company opted for Volvo Penta’s IPS-600 to utilize the drive’s high power to weight ratio.

“We needed an engine that would provide the best performance for our yacht, while also offering low fuel consumption, reduced noise and vibration, and have a minimal ecological impact with low emissions,” says Mr. Cesare Mastroianni, Vice President Sales & Chief Commercial Officer, from Absolute Yachts. “We have found the ideal propulsion drive with Volvo Penta’s IPS.”

Absolute Yachts has been designing and building boats for the leisure market since 2002 at its shipyard near Piacenza, not far from Milan. It creates a range of marine vessels from 12 meters to 22 meters, including the Flybridge series, Sport Yacht, Sport Line, and Navetta models. All of them use Volvo Penta IPS.

The new 15-meter 50Fly combines functionality and comfort in a compact boat. It can accommodate up to six guests in its three cabins, while a fourth supplementary cabin can house an additional crew member.

The boat has a well-equipped galley, dining area and sunbathing deck. Glass sliding doors optimize the use of space and light. The fly-bridge hosts further touches to maximize convenience and on-board enjoyment including sofas and additional dining space, as well as an ice-maker and fridge, sink and barbecue grill.

Optimal power, optimal comfort
The twin installation Volvo Penta IPS-600 drives each produce 435hp at a rated 3,500 RPM. The forward-facing twin counter-rotating propellers sit below the hull to operate in undisturbed water. As such they cause less drag and provide up to 30 per cent better fuel consumption than a traditional inboard shaft engine. The Stage III/Tier 3 IPS-600 also reduces particulate, NOx and hydrocarbon emissions.

Volvo Penta’s complete IPS range is suitable for yachts, sport cruisers, sport-fishing and semi-planing boats up to 100 feet. All installations are equally easy to drive with standard controls, joystick and all ‘Easy Boating’ options available.

Easy Boating encompasses Volvo Penta’s philosophy that leisure boating should be simple, safe and enjoyable. Optional components of Easy Boating include the customizable Glass Cockpit controls, e-Key Remote, Joystick Inboard, and Battery Management System.

“Absolute Yachts has been a great customer of ours for many years, using different IPS drives in their yachts,” says Nicola Pomi, marine sales manager at Volvo Penta.

“We’re delighted they’ve chosen the IPS-600 as the best propulsion system for their new 50Fly yacht, and look forward to a continuing relationship.”

Volvo Penta will be at berth 186 on the marina at the Sydney International Boat Show.
