“The Volvo Group stresses care for the environment not only by improving the efficiency of our transport solutions, but also by minimizing the environmental footprint of our operations,” said Mark Pannell, Hagerstown plant environmental manager. “We are honored to be recognized for our efforts and accomplishments here in Hagerstown.”
The Hagerstown facility develops and manufactures heavy-duty powertrain components for Mack Trucks, Volvo Trucks, Volvo Bus and Prevost vehicles. The plant is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Plants Challenge Program. As part of the program, the plant, along with 13 other Volvo Group U.S.-based facilities, is committed to a 25 percent improvement in energy efficiency by the end of 2020, a goal that was achieved five years early in 2015. Since then, Hagerstown and the other Volvo Group sites have pledged another 25 percent energy efficiency improvement by the end of 2025.
Several projects have contributed to a reduction of the site’s environmental footprint, including lighting system retrofits, HVAC modernization, equipment replacements and the installation of one of the largest solar canopies in the eastern U.S.
Maryland Green Registry Leadership Award winners represent a variety of facility types and sizes, but all have several key factors in common that contribute to their success: an organization-wide commitment to environmental performance; a green team that meets on a regular basis; and annual environmental goals and measurement of results.
